OT Network Segmentation Design

Design OT network boundaries that reduce cyber exposure without disrupting critical operations.

The Challenge

OT networks need protection without compromising operations

Many operational environments have grown over time through projects, upgrades, vendor connections and changing operational requirements. Networks that were originally separated can become increasingly connected, with pathways between IT, OT, remote users, suppliers and critical control systems that are poorly understood or difficult to manage.

A generic network design can introduce controls that do not reflect process dependencies, required communications, legacy technology or the limited opportunities available to make changes in live environments. Blocking the wrong connection can interrupt monitoring, control, safety functions or essential support activity.

Effective segmentation requires more than installing a firewall or creating a VLAN. It requires a clear understanding of the assets, services and communications that matter most, the risk associated with each connection and the operational constraints that shape what can be changed.

Without a practical OT segmentation design, organisations can struggle to contain cyber events, control access to critical systems or make network changes with confidence. Exposure can remain hidden across trusted connections, unmanaged pathways and inconsistent firewall rules.

Our approach

Segmentation designed around operational dependencies

Implicit OT designs network segmentation around the systems, services and operational outcomes that need protection. We work with engineering, operations, cyber and support teams to understand how the environment communicates, which connections are required and where security boundaries can reduce material exposure.

We define logical zones, controlled conduits and security requirements for traffic moving between OT systems, enterprise networks, remote-access services, vendors and third parties. This includes the access rules, architecture patterns and operational requirements needed to make the design workable.

Our engineering-led approach turns segmentation into a deliverable plan. Rather than recommending a generic reference architecture, we provide a practical design that supports implementation, testing, commissioning, maintenance and ongoing assurance across the OT lifecycle.

How We Can Help

OT Network Architecture Review

Review of existing OT network architecture, connectivity, trust boundaries and security controls to identify exposure and design opportunities.

Zones & Conduits Design

Definition of logical OT zones and controlled conduits based on system function, criticality, risk and required communications.

IT/OT Boundary Design

Secure architecture for connections between enterprise IT and OT, including DMZ patterns, data exchange, administration and controlled service access.

Remote Access Segmentation

Secure separation of employee, contractor and vendor access pathways from critical OT systems, with controlled entry points and monitored connections.

Firewall Rule & Traffic Design

Practical traffic requirements, firewall-rule design and communication flows that allow essential services while limiting unnecessary access.

Implementation & Assurance Support

Support through design review, implementation planning, testing, commissioning and validation to confirm segmentation operates as intended.
